Photos from Spello

This ancient Roman city (Hispellum), is located in East-central Umbria about 8 km (5 miles) South of Assisi.
It contains over two dozen churches and chapels; the most fascinating one for my interests is the Cappella Tega,
since its vaulted ceiling contains very striking paintings of the Four Evangelists together with their traditional symbols.
For more information, see also my webpage on the Symbols of the Four Evangelists.

The Ceiling of the Cappella Tega:

St. Mark and the Lion
St. Luke and the Ox
St. John and the Eagle
St. Matthew and the Angel

Some of the Wall Paintings inside the Cappella Tega:

St. Paul (with sword)

The Crucifixion of Jesus

St. Peter (with keys)

Porta Consolare - The Main City Gate of Spello
(from Roman times, but frequently rebuilt and altered since then)
