Johannine Themes in Christian Liturgy

Liturgical Music related to the Gospel and Letters of John
by Gail Gresser and Felix Just, S.J.

The influence of the Fourth Gospel and the Johannine Letters upon Catholic liturgical music is substantial. In the following tables, hymns and songs drawn at least in part from John's Gospel or Letters are listed, along with, so far as is known, each piece's composer, year of composition, and the scripture passage(s) which it uses.

The overall organization of the tables is by chapters of the biblical texts. In some cases a chapter is subdivided, if the sections of it are sufficiently different from one another. For example, John 1 has been subdivided into vv. 1-18 (the Prologue) and vv. 19-53 (John the Baptist, and the call of the disciples). Within each of these major scriptural divisions, the songs are listed alphabetically by title.

For each of the songs, we have attempted to list the origins of both the text and the music. In some cases, of course, the text and/or the melody have long histories and have passed through multiple hands. We have tried to include information that will give a sense of the times and places of the piece's origin and development. For more precise detail on the copyright information and the history of the pieces, please consult the hymnals listed, or contact the publishers directly. In some cases, the same text is put to a variety of musical settings. Such pieces are listed only once, but note is made of the various musical settings employed, and, where possible, specific reference is made to which setting is used by which publisher.

The major publishers of Catholic liturgical music have been included. Our use of "publisher" does not presume that the musical work was either originally published by or copyrighted by the company listed. Instead, the publishers of all hymnals that include the song in question are listed in the "publisher" column. The publishers include:

Although we used the publishers' scriptural indices as initial resources, the biblical references in the following tables differ substantially from those given by the publishers. Sometimes their references were erroneous; at other times they may have referred to one or two biblical passages, but failed to include all the textual references to the Fourth Gospel. In some cases, titles listed by publishers as referring to John were eliminated because they were not based upon marked or specific Johannine features. For example, all four Gospels tell of the crucifixion of Jesus, but a song is listed in the first table below only if it refers to some aspect of the crucifixion that is strongly or uniquely Johannine (e.g., the piercing of Jesus' side, or his mother at the foot of the cross).

Song texts differ as to how closely they follow the scriptural text. Some songs are only loosely or vaguely based upon a story, theme or image found in John. Other songs paraphrase a Johannine passage in a general way, while still others directly quote a Johannine text. Insofar as possible, we list which part of the song is based upon which biblical verse(s). In general, "loose" employment of John is so noted. Paraphrased but close references are referred to as "based upon" a particular passage. When the scripture is directly or almost exactly quoted, we simply note that the song is "from" a certain passage.

We have attempted to be as comprehensive as possible in the listing of hymns and songs related to John, and as detailed as possible in the exact scriptural references. Nevertheless, the following tables are obviously still incomplete. We welcome any corrections or suggestions for additions. Please e-mail fjust--at--jesuits.org (replacing --at--with @) with corrections or suggestions for additions. Thanks!
