Johannine Literature in the Catholic Lectionary for Mass
(1981 Latin Ordo Lectionum Missae)

compiled by Felix Just, S.J., Ph.D.

Readings from John's Gospel in Weekday Masses:

Notes:

  1. No passages from John's Gospel are prescribed for any weekdays during the Season of Ordinary Time.
  2. The numbers in the first column are from the 1981 Latin Ordo Lectionum Missae. Any numbers between 39 and 260 are one less than the corresponding number in the 1969 Latin Ordo Lectionum Missae and the 1970 USA Lectionary for Mass, due to a change in the placement of the Chrism Mass of Holy Thursday.

Readings from John's Gospel on the Feasts of Saints:

Notes:

  1. The numbers in the first column are identical in the 1969 Latin, 1970 USA, and 1981 Latin Lectionaries.
  2. Major Feasts with prescribed "Proper" readings are given in bold, while Memorials with optional readings are not in bold.
  3. For most feasts, the 1969 Latin Ordo (and thus also the 1970 USA Lectionary) only gives cross-references to the "Common Readings" for the appropriate category of saint or feast (bishops, martyrs, virgins, etc.). In contrast, the 1981 Latin Ordo recommends a particular reading for each feast and each saint, although these readings are taken from the appropriate "Commons."

Readings from John's Gospel optional in other Masses:
(Common of Saints, Ritual Masses, Votive Masses, and Masses for Various Needs and Occasions)

Notes:

  1. The numbers in the first column are from the 1981 Latin Ordo Lectionum Missae, which are very different from the 1969 Latin Ordo Lectionum Missae and the 1970 USA Lectionary for Mass, due to the addition of many more Masses in the second editions of the Lectionary.

  2. Most of these Masses have several different optional texts; thus, the first number refers to the group of recommended readings while the number after the period indicates which option within the group this particular reading is.
