PEACE in the New Testament

by Felix Just, S.J., Ph.D.

Biblical Greek Vocabulary for Peace:

The ancient Greek word for "peace" (εἰρήνη or eirēnē) and related words are used 100 times in 92 different verses of the New Testament, especially in the writings of Luke and Paul.
Many of these uses occur in common greetings between people, while other uses speak more substantially of peace as a virture and the importance of making or maintaining peace.
Words for peace are also used 368 times in the Septuagint (LXX, the Greek translation/expansion of the Hebrew Bible), usually in translating the Hebrew word shalom.
The English word "irenic" ("peaceful; amiable") and the name "Irene" are also derived from this ancient Greek root.Peace
