Who is Kalki?

According to Hindu belief, Kalki is an avatar, the
tenth incarnation of the Lord Vishnu. While Hindus
believe in many gods and deities, Vishnu is by far one
of the most important. It is believed that the
avatars, meaning "descent down" according to its
Sanskrit roots, are a concrete material form of the
essence of gods, such as Vishnu, that come down to
earth. (The Catholic Encyclopedia)

Although some believe thatthere have been as many as 28 avatars, there are ten main avatars that are more commonly believed to have come down to earth at various cyclical stages. In the case of Kalki, he is an avatar yet to come.

When will he come?

For Hindus, Kalki is the avatar of the coming age.
It is believed that he will come to the earth at the
end of an age "when corruption is beyond every measure
of control, necessitating the end of the world."
(Kalki)
This end of an age is commonly referred to as the Kali Yuga, or dark
age. According to the Bhagavad Gita, one of the
Hindu Holy Scriptures, an avatar will come, "Whenever
there is decay of righteousness. . .and there is
exhaltation of unrighteousness, then I, Myself come
forth. . .for the destruction of evil-doers for the
sake of firmly establishing righteousness. I am born
from age to age."
(Bhagavad Gita, fourth discourse).

The Vishnu Purana, another sacred Hindu scripture also
reflects this belief:
He will then re-establish righteousness upon the
earth, and the minds of those who live at the end of
the Kali age shall be awakened, and shall be as
pellucid as crystal. The men who are thus changed by
virtue of that peculiar time shall be as the seeds of
human beings, and shall give birth to a race who shall
follow the laws of the Krita age, the Age of Purity

(Vishnu Purana 4:24)

"When Kalki comes, he will rise from the sea on a
great white horse . . .with a sword in hand. He
will destroy the impure world, killing everyone except
those that seek refuge in him."
(Kalki)

"Kalki will be the one who is the beginning and the
end, and who comprehends all things. . . [he will] be
endowed with eight superhuman faculties. By his irresistible
might he will destroy all the barbarians and thieves, and all those whose minds are devoted to iniquity" (Vishnu Purana 4:24).

Has Kalki Come Yet?

Many Hindus believe that Kalki has already come to earth because the state of society and the world suggests the end of Kali Yuga.

Hindu Prophecies:

"In the Kali Yuga, wealth alone will be the deciding factor of nobility [in place of birth, righteous behavior or merit]. And brute force will be the only standard or deciding what is righteous or just."

Mutual liking [and not family pedigree, social status, etc.] will be the deciding factor in choosing a partner in marriage; cheating will be the order of the day in business relations; satisfaction of sexual pleasure will be the only consideration of male or female excellence and worthiness.

"In that [Kali] age, people will be greedy. They will take to wicked behavior. They will be merciless, indulge in hostilities without any cause, unfortunate, extremely covetous for wealth and women. High social status will be attained by Sudras, fisherman and such other classes..."

"When deceit, falsehood, lethargy, sleepiness, violence, despondency. grief, delusion, fear, and poverty prevail, that is the Kali Yuga..."

"...mortal beings will become dull-witted, unlucky, voracious, destitute of wealth yet voloptuous, and women, wanton and unchaste?.

Countries will be laid waste by robbers and vagabonds; the Vedas will be condemned heretics; kings will exploit their subjects, and twice-borns like Brahmanas will only think of the gratification of their sexual desires and other appetites.

Celibates [of the Brahma Carya ashrama] will cease to observe their vows of study, purity and celibacy; householders will take to begging [instead of giving alms]; hermits [of the vanaprastha ashrama] will resort to villages [leaving their retreats in the forests]; and Sannyasins will be extremely greedy for money.[in short, the whole system of the Varnashrama Dharma will have broken down.]

" Petty - minded people will conduct business transactions and merchants will be dishonest. In the Kali Yuga, men will abandon their parents, brothers, friends, and relatives. They will occupy high seats [and pulpits] and will [pretend to] preach religion.

People will have their minds weighed down with constant anxiety and fear. This will be due to devastating famines and heavy taxation. The land will not grow food-crops, and the people will always be in fear of impending droughts. (Hindu Prophecies)

Present Day Kalki Movements

The belief in a Kalki avatar who will come to restore peace to the world is alive in countries throughout the world. While many still await his descent to earth, many other believers have faith that he is already here on earth. Many people throughout the world claim to be Kalki and movements around these people are growing everyday. The following sites explore the teachings and doctrines of people claiming to be Kalki, as well as other movements centered around the belief of the Kalki avatar. (Kalki Avatar--The Prediction)

Sathya Sai Baba In India today there are millions of followers who believe Sathya Sai Baba to be a miracle man and the avatar of today. In 1953 at the age of 27 Sai Baba began his public preaching and since than has attracted many people to his system of beliefs. He himself states that the belief in him as an avatar must be explored and answered by each individual.

Sathya Sai Baba claims, "No one can understand my Mystery. The best you can do is to get immersed in it. It is no use your arguing about pros and cons; dive and know the depth; eat and know the taste. You must dive deep into the sea to get the pearls. What good is it to dabble among the waves near the shore, and swear that the sea has no pearls in it and that all tales about them are false? So also if you must realise the full fruit of this Avathar, dive deep and get immersed in Sai Baba. Half-heartedness, hesitation, doubt, cynicism, listening to tales, all are of no avail. Concentrated complete faith - that alone can bring victory."

Sai Baba states that he has incarnated as the Kalki avatar to bring about peace and 'ananda', meaning bliss, to the chaotic and destructive world. Sai Baba states that he has come to protect the virtuous and reform the evil-doers:

People tell me that mankind is on the brink of destruction, that the forces of hypocrisy and hate are fast prevailing on all continents, and that anxiety and fear are stalking the streets of every city and village in the world; there is no need to tell me this, for I have come precisely for this reason. When the world is on the verge of chaos, the Avatar comes to still the storm raging in the hearts of men. Prasanthi, the higher Peace, will be established soon; the demonic deviations from the straight Divine Path will be corrected. Dharma will be revived and re-vitalised in every human community.

In my present Avatar, I have come armed with the fullness of the power of formless God to correct mankind, raise human consciousness and put people back on the right path of truth, righteousness, peace and love to divinity...

In this avathar [Divine Incarnation], the wicked will not be destroyed; they will be corrected and reformed and educated and led back to the path from which they have strayed.

Sai Baba's message and his accepting nature appeals to his followers. As he states himself, he regards his followers as his children, and himself as their mother, therefore they are called not to be afraid, but to place their trust in him, "I ask only that you turn to me when your mind drags you into grief or pride or envy. Bring me the depths of your mind, no matter how grotesque, how cruelly ravaged by doubts or disappointments. I know how to treat them. I will not reject you. I am your mother. . .Why fear when I am here? Put all your faith in Me. I shall guide and guard you."

Anand Sundaram's Kalki Page According to this site, Kalki has returned to earth with his consort Sri Padmavathi Devi. It is believed that Kalki will help millions of suffering people from diseases and family and relationship problems, and other crises of the present age. Kalki has come to transform the world in its present age and usher in the Golden age. He will bring about peace and happiness, but unlike Christian scripture, he is not here to destroy the world but to reform it:

"His work will be to transform this world into the Golden Age of another ten thousand years....An age bereft of mental turmoil an age full of perpetual bliss and happiness. He will not hesitate to approach the problem the hard way,i.e,widespread destruction if the situation causes Him to take such action ,but nevertheless,He will NOT destroy the world (as believed by some people)."

The belief in this particular present-day Kalki has become a major movement throughout the world, with Kalki Temples being built everywhere from the US to Mexico to Sweden.

Foundation for World Awakening This site explores one movement whose followers believe their Kalki was born in South India. He has emerged today because of society's evil and the loss of peace. "Kalki Avatar has come to give complete Enlightenment to Mankind and make the transition to the golden Age. His name means 'The annihilator of darkness'. He is the source and the founder of this spiritual movement."

As a child Kalki was very reflective and introspective rather than accustomed "to play and mischief" and he declared early on that he would change the world. Today there is a huge Kalki movement surrounding the teachings and beliefs of this so-called Kalki avatar. This movement has spread from India and has become the Foundation for World Awakening.

Kalki and his six disciples, or 'Masters of the Movement' have created schools and spread their beliefs throughout many countries including, the US, Russia, Sweden, Sri Lanka, and Australia.

Kalki Bagwan--A Fraud of the Century This site looks skeptically at a present day movement known as the 'Kalki Cult' and the leader, Mr. Vijayakumar, who is this group's so-called Kalki. Mr. Vijayakumar and his friend Mr. Sankar got a notion to "play his gimmicks to make himself 'Kalki Bagwan' the tenth avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu in Kali Yug, the current era".

Consequently, a school was started. Mr. Vijayakumar dressed in yellow robes and called himself 'Kalki Bagwan' in an attempt to fool others. As he started spreading his mystical message, many people were "Bewildered by his babblings and bewitched by his hypnotizing eyes behind a bushy moustache and beard, people began to throng round him begging for boons and gratification of their multi-faceted desires".

Although in recent years it is said that this cult has gone underground, the stories and rumors of Kalki Bagwan continue today. "The cult caught fancy of the people like a wild-fire and Bagwan's ashram grew rich by leaps and bounds." The cult attracted many young people who were to have the mission of catching "the international market". However, many parents complained to the police about their missing sons and daughters. And although the police have been investigating, "their efforts are being forestalled mainly because it is a matter of religion which our Constitution guarantees to the individuals and the youths claim they have attained majority and there is no question of kidnapping or mesmerising them."

This cult, like many other movements have spread to other countries such as Japan, Argentina and the US.

In the same site, Kalki Bagwan--A Fraud of the Century, a list of techniques used by self-proclaimed Kalki incarnates is provided:

1) They create an impressive look by donning colourful robes and choosing a calm place with a sylvan background as their ashram.

2) They set afloat rumors about their miraculous healing powers through their agents in the gnarl of devotees.

3) In the name of Dyana, Yoga, etc., they offer a psychological relaxation to the stressful minds of the devotees and create an illusion of seeing God, Atman, etc. in the form of light or a shock.

4) They seek the patronage of the politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen, judges, etc., to add credibility to their stature.

5) They expand their clientele with the creation of a powerful band of followers, and with fraud and trickery, if need be.
