Missale Romanum
(Liturgical Readings in the Roman Missal prior to the Second Vatican Council)

The following table lists all the biblical readings prescribed in the pre-Vatican II Roman Missal for all Sundays, Feasts, and Weekdays, in the order printed in the sixth Benzinger edition (New York: Benzinger Brothers, 1947):

NEW FEATURE: In 1593, Jerome Nadal, SJ, published a series of 153 woodcuts in Evangelicae Historiae Imagines ("Illustrations of the Gospel Stories"), arranged according to the chronology of the life and ministry of Jesus. These woodcuts were republished in 1595 under the title Adnotationes et Meditationes in Evangelia ("Notes and Meditations on the Gospels"), rearranged in the order of the readings in the Roman Missal.

DAY FIRST READING GOSPEL READING
Note: The 1947 Benzinger and most other editions of the Roman Missal do not include letters (a, b, c) in the biblical references;
but a careful comparison with the biblical texts shows that sometimes only part of a verse is included in the readings, as indicated above.

*Note in the Missal on the number of Sundays after Pentecost:
Si dominicae post Pentecosten fuerint plures quam XXIV, tunc post XXIII resumuntur Missae dominicarum quae superfuerunt post Epiphaniam, ut infra habentur, iuxta ordinem qui in rubricis invenitur. Et ultimo loco semper ponitur Missa dominicae XXIV.
That is, if there are more than twenty-four Sundays after Pentecost in any particular year, then after the 23rd Sunday one continues with the Sunday Masses that did not occur after Epiphany in that year (depending on how early or late Ash Wednesday was); on these "extra" Sundays at the end of the liturgical year, one uses the readings and prayers of the Masses for the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and/or 6th Sundays after Epiphany; bu
t the year always ends with the 24th Sunday after Pentecost.

*Notes: The OT statistics do not include the Psalms, which are often used in the Roman Missal for the Gradual (just before the Gospel);
but they do include the OT texts recommended for the Vigil of Easter (12 readings) and the Vigil of Pentecost (6 readings), most of which were dropped in 1951;
this table also does not include the very brief scriptural texts from the Psalms, other OT books, or NT epistles
prescribed in the Roman Missal for the various Antiphons of the Mass (Introit, Offertory, Communion).
