Purpose/Goals:

Preparation/Research:
  1. Review Powell's discussion of Luke's Christology (how Jesus is characterized or portrayed in the Gospel).
  2. Read the selected chapters from the Acts of the Apostles, as assigned for 9/22/99 on the THST 305 Course Syllabus.
  3. Compare how the Apostles are characterized in Acts and how Jesus is depicted in Luke, in five different ways:

  4. a) what the author of Acts directly says about the Apostles; and what the author of Luke directly claims about Jesus.
    b) what the Apostles are quoted as saying in Acts; and what Jesus is quoted as saying in Luke.
    c) what the Apostles are depicted as doing in Acts; and what Jesus is depicted as doing in Luke.
    d) what other characters in Acts say in reaction to the words and deeds of the Apostles; and what other characters in Luke say in reaction to the words and deeds of Jesus.
    e) what other characters in Acts do in reaction to the words and deeds of the Apostles; and what other characters in Luke do in reaction to the words and deeds of Jesus.
Writing Assignment:
  1. Write 1½ to 2 pages comparing the depiction of the Apostles in Acts with the portrayal of Jesus in Luke; give one or more specific examples for each of the five categories listed above. For clarity, discuss these in five separate brief paragraphs.
  2. Always cite chapter & verse numbers, not only when you quote a text, but even when you merely refer to passages!
  3. Please also pay careful attention to the quality of your writing, even in such a short paper:
